Class involvement in the selection of the service learning project is a great way to start off the service learning experience.
A suggested activity for your class is to use these materials for students to learn about the community partner organization, the services it provides, the social issue the service-project addresses, how the social issue relates to the USF community/students, and service project awareness and tips.
Activity:
Break students into 6 small groups.
Provide each group with a service project packet or portions of the packets. (Provided below)
Give the students questions to discuss. (15 minutes)
Ask the groups to share what they learned and discussed with the class. (5-10 minutes)
Reiterate why the service-learning project is valuable to the students and the Tampa community. Discuss the connections between the social issue and the UE curriculum/first-year student experience. Discuss the goals for the service-learning project and what students hope to achieve for themselves and the community through the experience. (10 minutes)
